BRIGID’S STORY

Brigid worked at camps for kids with disabilities throughout her teenage years. One hot summer day, her buddy, 4-year-old Keegan, who did not communicate using words, sang the Bubblegum song clearly and in its entirety. She was hooked!

Brigid and her husband, Daniel, met in Tennessee while in graduate school. Californians since 2006, they are blessed to be a part of the beautiful community of Leucadia and Encinitas. Between piano lessons (still taught by Mom), Little League, skateboarding, boogie boarding, and kids being kids, the Shamburg family also makes time to read, camp, hike, and be outdoors as much as possible.

Brigid and Daniel homeschooled two of their three boys during the pandemic, while she also continued to provide therapy services both over telehealth and in-person. During this unique period of stress and growth, Brigid and Daniel observed how vitally important relationships are to children. This was the catalyst for Brigid to become a DIRFloortime practitioner and open One of a Kind.

Additionally, Brigid was a competing member of the award-winning San Diego Chorus for 10 years. She has utilized the skilled vocal coaching and training to support her understanding and approach to vocal, sound, and speech production.

MELANIE’S STORY

Her career spans hospitals, private clinics, schools, and home settings, with a consistent family-centered approach. She coordinated a reading tutoring program at Aviara Oaks Elementary School for 10 years. At One of a Kind, she provides home-based early intervention for children under age 3, as well as individual speech and language therapy for children of all ages in the clinic.

Originally from Central California, Melanie has called Carlsbad home since 1997. She has raised two kids just around the corner from the clinic, coordinated operations for the Carlsbad High football program as the Touchdown Club president, and remained deeply involved in the local community.

When she’s not in the therapy room, Melanie enjoys reading across genres, taking hip hop dance classes, and spending time with her husband and their two now-adult kids. With her son about to start college and her daughter launching into post-grad life, she’s savoring this in-between stage while continuing to help children find their voice and connect more meaningfully with the world and the people around them.
